3 Ways To Keep Your Swimming Pool (And Its Swimmers) Safe

Posted on

When you are a homeowner with a swimming pool, one of the most common questions you often ask yourself is whether or not your pool is safe. The last thing that you want is for someone in your family or one of your guests to get harmed while swimming in your pool or being around your pool. So, with that being said, here are a few things that you can do to ensure that your swimming pool is safe:

1. Make Sure You Have Adequate Safety-Related Equipment.

Does your pool have a cover and a fence? A pool cover should be used when the pool is not being utilized and a self-latching fence should be installed around the pool. The fence should be tall enough so that no one can climb over it, and the materials used to build the fence should not be easy to climb up. Don't forget to check your drain covers on a regular basis, as these can be very dangerous if they are broken or missing. Last, but not least, you should consider a door alarm if you have an exterior home door that leads out to the swimming pool.

2. Don't Leave Small Children Unattended.

Pools are always dangerous, and this is particularly true to small children. Therefore, if there are children swimming the pool, it is imperative that they are never, ever left alone and unattended – not even for a few seconds to go answer the telephone. You should actually have the phone outdoors with you in the event of an emergency. When possible, try to have more than one adult outside when children are in the pool in case another adult gets distracted so there is always someone keeping an eye on the children.

3. Keep the Pool Clean.

Pool water can get dirty if it is not cleaned on a regular basis, and that dirty water is the perfect environment for germs and bacteria that can cause various illnesses for swimmers. You can minimize the risk of those illnesses and diseases by taking the precautions and steps to keep your swimming pool and its water clean. You should use chlorine to sanitize your pool and test the water regularly to ensure the correct pH level is always maintained, which should be somewhere between 7.2 and 7.2, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If your pool pump is not working, call a professional to perform swimming pool pump repairs.
