The Winter Pool Maintenance To Remember Before Spring Opening

Posted on

Just because your pool is closed during the winter months, does not mean that you can forget about maintenance. Keeping up with the maintenance throughout the colder months will ensure you have fewer problems to deal with when you open your pool in spring. The following winter pool maintenance is upkeep you do not want to forget about before spring:

  • Pre-closing maintenance—Before closing your pool, there is maintenance that needs to be done. First, you will want to shock the water with chlorine treatment after it has been used for the last time. You will want to wait a few days and then check the chlorine and PH balance. You need to clean the skimmer baskets and backwash your pool filter to remove debris and start preparing to close it for the winter months. Also, check all the skimmer covers and pool drains to make sure they do not need repairs.
  • Preparing to close your pool—After doing the last of summer maintenance and water treatments, you are going to be ready to close your pool. If you do not plan on draining any water, you will want to add a winter treatment and circulate the pump for a few hours before turning it off. You will also want to cover your pool with a modern safety cover to prevent accidents during winter weather.
  • Regular winter pool inspections—Once you have covered the pool, you will be done with the maintenance, but it still needs to be checked occasionally. You will want to check the pump and plumbing for leaks and make sure the safety cover is well-fastened. You will need to occasionally remove debris and standing water from the cover to prevent wear and damage.
  • Occasionally circulating water—If you have not drained the water, it is important to occasionally circulate the water. Doing this will make sure that the winter water treatment is effective and that the winter weather does not cause problems. After circulating the water, you will want to backwash the pump again to remove any debris that the filter may have picked up. Turn the pump and filter on a couple of times a month to ensure the water is in good shape when you get ready to open your pool again.
