Telltale Signs Your Backyard Pool Is Leaking

Posted on

You love your backyard pool and all the amazing memories you make every summer with family and friends. Modern inground pools are manufactured to last for several decades. However, even if you properly maintain your pool, things can go wrong. One of the most common problems is a leak, and it isn't always obvious your pool is leaking.

Here are a few of the telltale signs of a leaking pool.

Drastic Changes in Water Levels

One of the most obvious signs — and a sign you might notice first — is that the water level will lessen at a much faster rate. Splashing kids and evaporation will make the water levels go down. However, if the water seems much lower from one day to the next, it is often a clear sign there is a leak. The faster the water levels go down, the more severe the leak.

Mushy Ground Around the Pool

Suppose there is a crack in the shell of your inground pool. The water will need to go somewhere and of course, it will seep into the ground around the pool. As the water leaks into the ground, you will begin to notice spots in your yard that are greener and feel mushy. There might even be standing water. If the problem is severe, you need to contact a professional immediately.

If left untreated and if the pool is near your house, the water could begin to leak into your basement.

Higher Than Normal Water Bills

Are you utilizing more water to maintain the level of the pool? Often, you will not even notice you are using more water until you get your monthly water bill and it is much higher than usual. If your daily usage has not changed, the culprit could be your leaking pool.

Discolored Water or the Presence of Algae

To remain clear and ready to enjoy, you must use a specific mixture of chemicals to maintain the pH balance of your pool's water. If the water becomes discolored and you notice algae, the issue might just be a leak in the pool. When the water leaks out, so do all the chemicals that keep your pool clean and clear.

If you notice discolored water or algae, do not enter your pool and instead, contact a professional. A professional pool technician can determine if you have a leak or if the chemical imbalance is caused by another problem.

From discolored water to higher water bills, there are several signs you have a leak in your backyard pool. For more information on pool leak detection, contact a professional near you.
